Benefits of Berries

Berries are small but mighty fruits often referred to as nature’s candy. Their very appearance indicates that they are good for you, as vibrantly colored fruits and vegetables provide the highest levels of nutrients. You can enjoy them alone, put them in desserts or salads, or use them to adorn some of your other favorite dishes. Here are some of the benefits of berries you can enjoy:

  • Antioxidants – Most berries are jam-packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your cells and help keep free radicals under control, as they can cause oxidative stress and damage.
  • Fiber – Fiber is a critical part of any healthy diet, and berries contain a lot of fiber. Fiber helps you maintain your weight and stay regular. Raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries are available from our berry distributors in the Bronx and can help add more fiber to your diet.
  • Weight Loss – Berries are low in calories and contain a lot of water, so they can keep you full for longer. This can help you manage your diet and potentially aid in weight loss.
  • Diabetes Prevention and Management – Berries can help improve your insulin response and blood sugar levels, which is crucial for managing and preventing diabetes.

It’s no secret that berries are extraordinarily nutritious. Including them in your diet can help you improve your health and wellness in a delightful way! Best Vegetables for a Summer BBQ

Meat has always been the center of attention during barbecue season, but summer is the perfect time to brighten up your plate with in-season summer fruits and vegetables. Veggies may make an appearance as a side dish, but you can turn them into the main attraction during grilling season. Here are some of our favorite summer vegetables available at the Hunts Point Produce Market you can enjoy at your next BBQ:

  • Bell Peppers – You can grill bell peppers whole or quarter them for skewers! Char your bell peppers on the grill for about 4 minutes until they are blackened, then let them steam for around 10 minutes. You’ll be left with smoky and delicious fire-roasted peppers!
  • Onions – Grilled onions should be a staple at your BBQ! Slice the onions into rounds, and place them on the grill for around 5 minutes to get enough char, then flip to cook the other side for a minute.
  • Roasted Garlic – While garlic is not traditionally associated with barbecues, you can easily roast garlic on the grill and bring more flavor to your dishes! All you need is aluminum foil and olive oil. Simply slice the top off an entire bulb of garlic, place it on foil, and drizzle it with oil. Then wrap up the garlic and put it on the grill for around 40 minutes.

Grilling your vegetables brings out every ounce of deep, roasted flavor and makes for a tasty and nutritious addition to your barbecue!

Watermelon Gardening Tips

There is nothing quite like a fresh, ripe watermelon from the Hunts Point Produce Market. However, it is also possible to grow delicious watermelon in your own garden! Getting your plants to produce this tasty fruit involves a lot of attention to the unique needs of the watermelon. Watermelons require fertile soil and a long growing season to produce good fruit. Before your start planting your watermelon garden, consider some of these tips:

  • Give them space – Watermelons are large fruit with vines that need a lot of room to grow. Place each watermelon hill about four feet away from each other to ensure they have enough space.
  • Plant multiple seeds – Planting numerous seeds from the start can help you grow great watermelons. As they begin to grow, you can determine which plants are most promising and thin out the rest. Try planting up to ten seeds on each hill.
  • Protect plants from pests – Watermelons are vulnerable to damage from insects. Protect your plants by using row covers or using an insecticide.
  • Avoid over-watering – The roots of a watermelon go deep underground, so they only need to be watered occasionally. Their soil should be kept moist but not soaking wet.
  • Weeding – You’ll need to stay vigilant when it comes to weeds and your watermelon plants, especially when they are young. When the vines are fully developed, it can be challenging to get to the weeds.
  • Support pollinators – The blossoms require pollination to bear fruit, so make sure you are being kind to bees. Remove row covers to allow for pollination.

All About Fried Green Tomatoes

As the garden season gets into full swing, green tomatoes will appear at the Hunts Point Market. One of the most delicious ways to enjoy green tomatoes is eating them fried. Our team at E. Armata Inc. would like to share some information about this Southern staple so you can enjoy delicious fried green tomatoes this season! Continue reading to learn more!

All About Fried Green Tomatoes

Green tomatoes tend to arrive early in the season at the Hunts Point Market. While most people associate fried green tomatoes with Southern cooking, their roots don’t run as deep as you would think. Fried green tomatoes became a southern icon after the release of the movie based on Fannie Flagg’s book “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.” After this low-budget movie turned out to be a great success, fried green tomatoes became an overnight southern culinary star! You can find this iconic dish in restaurants throughout the South, but here’s what you need to make classic fried green tomatoes at home:

  • Two large green tomatoes cut into thick slices.
  • One cup of all-purpose flour.
  • Two cups of cornmeal or cracker crumbs.
  • Two eggs.
  • ½ cup of milk.
  • Oil for frying.
  • Salt and pepper to taste. You can also add your favorite seasonings.

To prepare delicious fried green tomatoes at home, start by patting the tomato slices dry with a paper towel. Season both sides. Make this process simple by creating separate stations for your flour, eggs, milk, and cornmeal. Dust the tomatoes on both sides with flour, then dip the slices into the egg mixture. Set them into the cornmeal and carefully coat each side. Once all of the tomatoes are covered, fry them up in hot oil over medium heat until both sides are golden brown. Drain both sides, and serve with your favorite sauce!
