With a modest start in Manhattan at the Washington Street Market, E. Armata is now one of the largest wholesalers operating in Hunts Point and is proud to now be in the 4th generation stage. E. Our History With New York Produce
IT ALL STARTED WITH A LEMON…
Our Founder Erasmo Armata came from Sicily in the late 1890’s through Ellis Island as a poor immigrant. Erasmo settled in Manhattan and frequented the Fruit Auction in lower Manhattan (later the location of the World Trade Center) where he purchased lemons and sold them out of a burlap bag he carried on his back as he walked the streets of Manhattan.

E. Armata is one of the leading berry distributors in the northeast. To provide our customers with the freshest berries, we have regular availability of strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries, all arriving fresh daily. Eastern Vegetables
E. Armata’s Eastern Vegetable department carries a full line of items from Florida up the East Coast through Canada as well as Texas and Mexico. We partner with top growers and shippers to bring to you the highest quality New York produce available. Our goal is to keep a fresh turn of inventory to give you the freshest product possible.
Fruit
E. Armata’s Fruit department is one of its flagship programs. John Acompora has been the head of the Fruit department for over 18 years. In his tenure, he has continued to grow relationships with shippers and customers that have been a part of the Armata family for more than 30 years. The fruit department sources product globally, including but not limited to grapes, apples, pears and stone fruit from the United States, New Zealand, Chile and the South Americas, citrus from California, Morocco, Spain, and South Africa, and more exotic fruit such as lychee from Vietnam, China, and Mexico. The diverse sources of product for the E. Armata fruit department enables us to provide all the desired sizes and varieties of fruit for our customers year-round.
Herbs are sourced year-round from the Middle East and South America in order to provide the freshest and most affordable New York Produce.
Melons
E. Armata is proud to be amongst the leading distributors of melons on the east coast. It’s our pleasure to have year-long supplies of honeydews, cantaloupes and variety melons. We are fortunate to have relations with the most respected growers from Central America, California, and Arizona. E. Armata is also well known throughout the produce industry as being a long-time supplier of watermelons. Decades of long partnerships with our growers from Central America, Texas, Florida and up the east coast has solidified our ability to best serve our cherished and much appreciate customers.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are delivered fresh daily to E. Armata from local growers only a few hours away. We also work with exotic mushroom suppliers, providing a broad range of specialties. Wholesale brokers, restaurants, and retail customers are supported with a variety of mushrooms ranging from retail cello packs through ten-pound bulk cases.
Potatoes, Onions, & Carrots
The potato and onion department is one of E. Armata’s fastest expanding in the past three years. With the expansion of our warehouse space three years ago, E. Armata found a new home in order to develop our potato and onion program. We pride ourselves on continually receiving a product from the freshest growing regions throughout the year in order to ensure the highest quality hardware for our customers. When it comes to shopping for potatoes and onions, E. Armata is the right place to be!
Salads
In the salad department, fresh brand name clamshells are available in both organic and conventional choices. Salad offerings include arugula, 50/50 blend, herb, kale, spring mix, romaine, sweet lettuce, and spinach. Crisp cello-bagged savoy spinach is also delivered fresh daily and Kosher peeled garlic in individual 5-pound jars, and cases of 20 one-pound jars are available. At E. Armata the salads are rotated continuously to offer the most extended shelf life, the best quality for our customers
Tomatoes
E. Armata’s tomato department is backed by over 100 years of combined experience in purchasing, selling, and repacking tomatoes, and is regarded as one of the elite tomato houses in the New York Produce Industry. Led by Louis Solomon, the tomato department is filled with enthusiasm and passion for the highest quality tomatoes. The qualified expertise of E. Armata’s tomato department has demonstrated a profound ability to seasonally source rounds and romas from California, Mexico, Florida, up the east coast, and into Canada. Proper handling of tomatoes is paramount, load temperature is delicately determined based on color and condition at the packing house, and then they are carefully repacked in our warehouse based on size and color to order! E. Armata is always focused on customer needs, and our tomato department is quintessential to this mission.

The constant growth and expansion of cultures in our society call for extra measures to meet the needs and demands of the same. We have added a full line of tropical fruits and vegetables, imported from high-quality growers in Central and South American countries. We strive to offer a daily, fresh supply to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

These alliances have allowed us to source the freshest, most in-season products from all across the Western hemisphere. Here at E. Armata, we handled Bunch Spinach, Baby Spinach, Spring Mix (mesclun), limes, and Watermelons all packed in our exclusive E. Armata label.
One of our Premier Grape shippers (Pretty Lady Vineyards) packs an LA12 label in memory of John and Karen Acomporas’ son Louis. Louis passed away in March of 2000 after getting hit in the chest with a lacrosse ball while saving a routine shot playing goalie. Louis’ parents John and Karen along with Nick Dulcich of Pretty Lady Vineyards created this label together to raise awareness of conditions related to sudden cardiac arrest along with the importance of CPR and the use of AEDs (automatic external defibrillators). Not only do these grapes help raise awareness, but they also have a massive following due to there tremendous size and sweet flavor.
State Of The Art, Newly Renovated
As our company continues to flourish, we find that it is essential to upgrade our facility as well as our equipment. Located on the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, NY, we have invested in E. Armata’s future with facility acquisitions, renovations, technology upgrades, and fleet additions. Our newly renovated facility consists of over 60,000 square feet of temperature-controlled storage. We have a dedicated warehouse and repacking facility in a separate building at one end of the market which will organize our racking system to have every item a click away. This new upgrade enables us to offer a large variety of New York produce that can be picked up simpler than ever, at our Hunts Point facility, or delivered by our fleet of trucks.
We are fully committed to our customers, growers, and shippers. Following the completion of the total renovation of our warehouses, salesroom, and corporate offices with the latest technology, equipment, and processes, we have gained our SQF certification. We are proud to say our facility is known for its cleanliness and our ongoing effort to recycle as much as possible. We are excited to announce this upgrade and know it will help us strive for excellence to benefit not only our customers but our growers and shippers as well.

Recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), the SQF family of food safety and quality codes are designed to meet industry, customer, and regulatory requirements for all sectors of the food supply chain – from the farm all the way to the retail stores.
To offer our customers the freshest New York produce possible, we receive deliveries daily. Upon arrival at our cold-chain compliant facility, produce is thoroughly checked by our in-house quality control team to ensure that only the best product reaches our end users. We use an iPad system to upload product photos as deliveries are received. Our inspectors are trained by USDA Agricultural Marketing Service inspection standards. E. Armata is committed to proper inspection and handling to provide our customers the freshest produce to fill their orders and help their businesses flourish. Facts About the Hunts Point Market – New York Produce
- Hunts Point Market began in 1962 in the south Bronx. Starting at just 40 acres, space is now 60 acres long and covers approximately 700,000 square feet of refrigeration. The market contains seven refrigerated and freezer buildings that are governed by the United States Department of Agriculture.
- In June of 2011, the City of New York and the New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC) agreed to extend the Hunts Point Market lease by three years. Their support was very significant for the growth and the history of Hunts Point Market.
- The NYCEDC continued to work with the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Cooperative to develop a more long-term and modernized facility.
- The City and the State agreed to contribute money and work with the Produce Cooperative to secure additional third-party sources of funding.
- Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market, aka “The Market,” is responsible for 60% of the daily stock for all of New York City’s residents. The market is also is responsible for feeding 30 million people within the region.
